The loyalty really is extreme, especially around where you live. I was in Norman once a couple years ago visiting some friends on a game weekend. Some of their friends came over and were seriously mad about my Texas plates being in the parking lot. It made them even more upset that I had once lived in Oklahoma. Whoa.

But I'm sure he only made me be quiet because I was trying to get him to talk about something work-related and he was afraid I was missing the song. Most of his attempts at "music education" involved cheesy jokes and (oral) pop song-artist-year quizzes and sometimes a CD on my desk with instructions to listen while I grade. Yeah, true.
